There are a lot of cuisines that represent a country. However, I think it is the street foods that actually make you remember the country. In Korea, street foods are most loved in winter, and many people who have been to Korea or Koreans who live abroad miss it a lot. Let me introduce you to some of the favourites.
HODDUCK 호떡
‘Hodduck’ is a food that you can see easily on the streets in winter. It is very oily bread with honey, some nuts and sunflower seeds inside. The price is about 700 won to 2000 won; it varies by the size and the ingredients. These days they sell a green tea version too. Green Tea Hodduck is the same as the original one except that they added green tea powder, so the colour is green. Many people make Hodduck by themselves at home too. There are many kinds of packages and recipes for homemade Hodduck.
BOONG-EOU-BBANG 붕어빵
‘Boong-eou-bbang’ is also a very common food you can see in Korea. It is bread with red bean jam inside. The name of this food is due to the appearance which looks like a fish called Crucian Carp which is ‘Boong-eou’ in Korean. It is loved by people of all ages because of the fact that the surface is crispy and the custard inside is soft and sweet. They are usually sold for 1000 won for three. Sometimes the sellers give an extra Boong-eou-bbang, so when buying see if they give you one for free. However, it is considered to be rude of you to ask them first. Moreover, there are various versions of modern Boong-eou-bbang such as Kimchi or Chocolate.
EGG BREAD 계란빵
‘Egg Bread’ looks exactly like its name. It is bread with an egg on it. The bread usually contains walnuts, peanuts and sunflower seeds which makes the taste of it savory. Also they season the egg above the bread with salt, so the contrasting flavors of those two layers create great taste. These are usually sold with ‘Banana Bread’ which looks just like a banana. However, there isn’t any banana in it; it just looks and smells like banana. If you eat Egg Bread with Banana Bread, it will taste better because the two contrasting flavours balance each other. In addition I recommend eating these foods with milk because they are quite stuffy; they do not contain a lot of liquid. Usually, the Egg Bread is sold for 1000 won each and Banana Bread is sold at 1000 won for three.
I only introduced you to three kinds of Korean street foods, but I strongly recommend that you try all of the foods on the street. These three menus are the most common and safe foods to try so why don’t you give it a shot? They will help you to make good memories and experiences of Korean Culture.
